Success for Devon Scouts

Commonwealth Games

Dean Bale a former member of the Devon Squad won a bronze medal in the recent Commonwealth Games representing England. He started shooting with the 1st North Devon and went on through the National Scout Squad and GB Junior Squad to become a member of the GB Talent and performance squad.

South West Regional Inter-County Air Target Championships

The Devon A team consisting of Archie Philips ( Mortenhampstead) , Martha Jenkins( Beer) , Oliver Frost( Kingsteighton) and Ruth Frangleton( Mid Devon ESU) won the SWRIC Championships held at Okehampton.

20 scouts and Explorers from across Devon took part in this competition in teams of four shooting against teams from Somerset and Avon. These young people were selected from the Devon Squad who in turn were selected from the scouts and explorers who entered the DICQ.

National Scout Inter-County Air Target Championships.

These are held in April each year and Devon has entered a team for the last ten years. This year it was a young team as we had lost some of the older squad members but despite this the team of 8 finished in 4th place ahead of Somerset and Avon. Thanks to Fiona Gage, Dean Horder and Steve Frost for enabling the team to take part.

NSRA Spring Junior Cup

This is a national postal competition shooting and Devon entered an U18 and an U14 team. We were not successful in retaining the U14 cup but finished in the top ten in both competitions. Thanks to Bruce Harvey, the Smallbore Team Manager for running this.

Devon Target Camp

In May each year, a County Target Camp is held at Budleigh Farm. Moretonhampstead run by the Devon Target ASU to encourage Scouts/Explorers to take part in other shooting disciplines in particular Small-bore Rifle. Places are limited and due to demand a second Target camp is to be organised in 28/29th September. From this event two teams are selected to take part in the NSRA Junior Postal small bore Rifle competitions. Thank you to all the leaders who gave their time to make this a success.

Background

Devon Scouts have a proud tradition of taking part both in local, Regional and National Target Shooting competitions since 2002. Several of its alumni are currently representing Great Britain at World, Commonwealth, European and National levels. Groups from across the county take part in the National Scout Rifle Championships in October at Bisley Camp and have been successful over the years bringing back National Team and Individual titles. There are at present four organised scout clubs in the county; North Devon (Braunton), Exeter, East Devon (Beer) and Ivybridge who promote Target Shooting as an activity. The North Devon club is also a NSRA affiliated club. The young people are encouraged to join their local Small-bore and Air Target Clubs as well as taking take part in National Scout Squad and other National squads if selected.

DICQ

There are District championships in several of the districts and these culminate in the Annual DICQ shoot for Air Rifle and Air Pistol in December. Prior to this a postal competition takes place from September and the top 40 scouts/Explorers are invited to come to the head to head shoot in the DICQ shoot December at the Okehampton RC range.

From this, a Devon squad of 20 is selected which meets on a monthly basis for coaching through January to March. The squad members also take part in the SWRIC Target Championships. A Team is selected from this squad to represent Devon at the National Scout Air Inter County Championships held in April at Aldersley, Wolverhampton.

This events are organised and staffed by the Devon Target ASU.

SW Regional Inter-county Air Target Championships

The Devon Target ASU organise and host the SW Regional Inter-county Air Target Championships in January held at Okehampton RC range for the Luxton Shield.

Devon Target ASU

The Devon Target ASU is run under the umbrella of the Devon County Scout Council. Membership of the ASU is open to all adult members of the Scout Association who wish to develop and encourage Target shooting with young people. Target shooting is taken to include not only shooting disciplines but also Archery and Sport xbow as activities within the Scout Association. In addition to helping and running events for scouts, ASU members assist at the British Shooting South West Target Sprint in Exeter, the South West Schools Air Pistol Championships at Lewiston in Dorset and the Active Devon School Games at Barnstaple and Plymouth.

Courses

Airgun and xbow

Many of the groups within the county have leaders trained to NSRA YPS standards and offer target shooting as an activity to their groups.

Training courses are organised for leaders to gain NSRA YPS Air rifle, YPS Air Pistol and YPS Sport xbow. These are currently offered in Exeter, at the Nine Ashes campsites in Cornwall and in North Devon at Braunton by the County Shooting Advisors.

Members of the Target ASU are encouraged to take higher coaching qualifications as part of their participation as coaches in the Devon County Squad.

Archery

Courses for leaders to gain the Scout Archery Leaders qualifications are held throughout the year at various venues across the county run by County Archery Assessors.
